This is a good and digestible (pun intended) article on how to fuel your ride so you can ride well-fueled.

It looks to me like the takeaway for us on shorter rides is to stay well hydrated, and as you progress to longer rides variety, flexibility, and packing your favorite foods become more important.  And real food is always better than fake stuff (wink)!
